Alcohol alone is estimated to cost workplaces $6 billion per annum through the loss of productivity, absenteeism, accident and death; some industries are at greater risk than others.

Every workplace has a duty of care to provide employees a safe and healthy workplace; this includes the risks from either consumption of alcohol and/or drugs at work or when they are experiencing a hangover/come down (even when a drug may not be present in their body).

The flow-on effect of alcohol and drug misuse has linkages into mental wellbeing, workplace bullying and sexual harassment. Culturally these can be damaging to an organisation.

  • Workers admitted to taking over 11 million days off work due to alcohol or drug use annually
  • 1 in 6 workers reported using an illicit substance
  • 6% attend work under the influence
  • 5% workplace deaths are due to alcohol and drugs

In this session, Natasha Jager from the Australian Drug Foundation will explore preventative measures organisations can introduce to create a safe and productive workplace.
