Reid Industrial demonstrates new capacitive switching technologies at NMW 2008

14/04/2008
Reid Industrial will demonstrate reliable, cost-saving alternatives to existing capacitive sensing technologies on Stand 1709 during National Manufacturing Week at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre from May 27 to 30.

The QSlide and QWheel touch sensors can be used instead of conventional resistive sliders or rotary controls.

The QSlide works with a simple, linear-resistive element that can comprise a discrete series of connected resistors and a resistive thick-film layer or an optically clear indium tin oxide film for use over liquid crystal displays.

Dedicated algorithms are used to determine the touch position independent of signal strength for accurate and reliable detection.

The QWheel electrode consists of a simple resistive ring element connected to three capacitive channels. It can be placed behind any dielectric panel.

Both QSlide and QWheel based products process signals to 7-bits of absolute position. Output is via a standard SPI and 12C serial interface.

Further, the technology can sense through panels up to 3 mm thick, even when the user has gloved hands.

Reid Industrial representative, Kevin Huntingdon, said that when “placed behind plastic or glass, the circuit creates a smooth, sealed, indestructible rotary touch control that can replace virtually any mechanical encoder or capacitive potentiometer.

“It does not require a hole or knob and therefore has no service or maintenance problems.”

Reid Industrial will also exhibit products including membrane keypads, touch screens, electronic backlighting, foil and reflective decals and metal backing panels at the show.
